Paracetamol is a very widely used as medicine. It is painkiller and reduces the temperature of patients with fever. These actions are known respectively as analgesic and antipyretic. In 1893, the white, odorless crystalline compound with a bitter taste that became known as paracetamol was discovered. This happened at University of Strasburg when Professor Adolf Kussmaul, Department of Internal Medicine , asked two young assistants, Arnold Cahn and Paul Hepp, to treat patients with naphthalene as it had been used elsewhere as an internal antiseptic. The medicine had little effect on worms, but, paracetamol was found in the urine of patients who had taken phenacetin, who had a great reduction in fever temperature. In 1887, the Bayer company introduced the 4-ethoxy derivative, phenacetin, as a less toxic analogue of acetanilide. It was highly successful product and established the Bayer Company as a leading pharmaceutical manufacturer. Phenacetin was widely used for about 90 years until mou...

PARACETAMOL

PARACETAMOL Paracetamol , also known as  acetaminophen  or  APAP , is a medication used to treat pain and fever. It is typically used for mild to moderate pain. The quality of the evidence regarding the use for fever relief in children is poor. It is often sold in combination with other ingredients such as in many cold medications. In combination with opioid pain medication, paracetamol is also used for more severe pain such as cancer pain and pain after surgery. It is typically used either by mouth or  rectally  but is also available intravenously. Effects last between two and four hours. Paracetamol is generally safe at recommended doses. Serious skin rashes may rarely occur, and too high a dose can result in liver failure. It appears to be safe during pregnancy and when  breastfeeding .  In those with liver disease, it may still be used, but in lower dose...

Headache  Headaches are one of the most common medical complaints; most people experience them at some point in their life. They can affect anyone regardless of age, race, and gender . It can lead to other problems. People with chronic migraine headaches, for example, may find it hard to attend to  work or school regularly. Causes A headache can occur in any part of the head, on both sides of the head, or in just one location. There are different ways to define headaches. The International Headache Society (IHS) categorize headaches as primary, when they are not caused by another condition, or secondary, when there is a further underlying cause. Primary headaches Primary headaches are stand-alone illnesses caused directly...

Harmon Northrop Morse and Paracetamol

Imagen
Harmon Northrop Morse   ( October 15, 1848 – September 8, 1920) was an American chemist. Today he is known as the first to have synthesized  paracetamol ,  but this substance only became widely used as a drug decades after Morse's death. In the first half of the 20th century he was best known for his study of  osmotic pressure , for which he was awarded the Avogadro Medal in 1916.  The  Morse equation  for estimating osmotic pressure is named after him. Harmon Northrop Morse was a son of John Morse, who came from England in 1639 and settled in New Haven. His father, Harmon Morse, was a farmer, who considered all forms of recreation objectionable. Northrop's mother died at a young age, leaving behind Northrop, his brother Anson and his sister Delia. Scientific legacy Although Johns Hopkins was a research university from the beginning, the early years of the chemistry department were marked by a lack of st...
